The Pope is not Pop anymore

posted in People, Pope in Brazil, Religion by Rico Ferrari |

Isn’t Joseph Ratzinger Pop as Woytila was?

In a recent survey from Datafolha (the research Institute of Folha de Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most important newspaper), 51% of the interviewed people didn’t know the name of the Pope. Benedictus XVI, or Joseph Ratzinger, will visit the country next month.

Brazil is considered the biggest catholic country in the world, with most of 70% of their 180 ~ million people declaring themselves as catholics. Another 15 percent spawns their beliefs in various protestant denominations and the rest 15% belong to other churches or religions - or are non-believers.

Datafolha interviewed 5700 people from 236 towns in all of the 25 states.

“O Papa é Pop” (The Pope is Pop) is a famous 80’s song from Engenheiros do Hawaii (The Engineers from Hawaii), a pop band from Porto Alegre. You can listen to it here (.br). It’s the 7th track.

The Pope is not Pop anymore? Cover from the “O Papa é Pop” album.
